In the beginning drivers for Alfa Romeo were sponsored by Scuderia Ferrari and also before the race Scuderia would prepare the cars for them. Around 1938 Enzo was employed officially by Alfa Romeo. In 1940 he left his job at Alfa Romeo, after finding out about their plans to take over his beloved company.
Because of a contract with Alfa Romeo, Enzo Ferrari was restricted from being involved with racing for many years. During this restricted time Enzo Ferrari changed Scuderia Ferrari into "Auto Avio Costruzioni Ferrari" and produced aircraft accessories.
Also during his restricted time Enzo made the Tipo 815 a race car that would makes its debut at the Mille Miglia race in 1940, the race was hindered by WWII. One year after Enzo Ferrari moved his factory to Maranello in Italy of 1943 it was bombed. Enzo Ferrari waited till after WWII to rebuild his factory. It was during this time that he began to make street cars.
The first street car Ferrari made was the 125 S Ferrari which he built in 1947. But Enzo Ferrari's true passion was to make race cars. He admitted that the Ferrari street cars were made only to fund Scuderia Ferrari. Enzo Ferrari's distaste for the Ferrari street car customers was well known because they only bought them to show off as their status symbols.
Over time the Ferrari street cars became famous through their performance and style. The famous style of the Ferrari can be accredited to Pininfarina, Vignale, Bertone, Touring, Scagliette, and Ghia, which are some of the design houses Ferrari has worked with.
